Caring Curtin Malaysia students donate to orphanage

Miri – 11 December 2017 – A group of eight business students of Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) donated foodstuffs and other daily essentials purchased with profits they made from an entrepreneurship competition to the Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah Yakup in Bandar Baru Permyjaya recently.

Business students Ling Kah Lung, Angel Ling Sin Yew, Angie Pua Jia Chi, Bil Lee Yuan, Crystaul Lau Sie Jing, Fiona Lau Ai Ling, Li Vun Seng and Lim Shia Jing decided to use the proceeds from the sale of their ‘Dessert Wonderland’ homemade healthy desserts and fresh juices during the inaugural Curtin Malaysia Entrepreneurship Carnival in October for charity.

The sale was part of the ‘Student Entrepreneurship Challenge 2017’ organised by the Curtin Malaysia Faculty of Business, which required students to form business entities, submit business plans and execute them by conducting business during the Entrepreneurship Carnival.

“We felt we should use the proceeds in a meaningful way rather than splitting it amongst ourselves. There are always people in the community in need of help,” said group leader Kah Lung, a second-year management and marketing student.

He added the competition gave members of the group the opportunity to exercise their creativity, teamwork and leadership skills and hone their entrepreneurship skills.

Organised by the Faculty of Business to promote entrepreneurship and inculcate an entrepreneurial spirit amongst its students, the Curtin Malaysia Entrepreneurship Carnival saw the participation of 11 small and medium sized enterprises (SME) in Miri, including some owned and operated by Curtin Malaysia alumni.

The Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah Yakup is run by Lembaga Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Sarawak (LKAYS), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that serves to safeguard the welfare of orphans in Sarawak. The complex in Miri is the second in the state after the Kompleks Kebajikan Laila Taib in Kuching.
