Food court at Curtin Malaysia one of the cleanest, safest and most hygienic in the state

Miri – 15 May 2017 – The Sarawak State Health Department has awarded the food court at Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) the state-level Anugerah Medan Selera ‘Bersih, Selamat dan Sihat’ or ‘Cleanest, Safest and Most Hygienic’ Food Court Award for 2017.

The food court, which features eight food stalls serving a variety of local and international food and beverages, serves close to 5,000 students and staff of the campus. It is also popular among visiting academics and exchange students from Curtin’s main campus, as well as other visitors.

In a congratulatory letter to the university, Deputy Director of Health (Food Safety and Quality) Mohammad Jefri Crossley said the food court was declared the champion in the category for private food courts operating in shopping complexes and private premises. He congratulated the university management and the stall operators on the award, which includes a certificate and RM1000 cash prize, and for their commitment towards maintaining a top-class food court.

The food court at Curtin Malaysia will now represent Sarawak in the same category for the national level award, the judging of which will be carried out in July.

Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski said the award is testimony of the university’s ongoing efforts to further improve the student experience of the campus food court and food provision, and furthermore gives the campus community the reassurance that the campus facilities are strongly managed on their behalf.

The food court at Curtin Malaysia is fully managed by the university management and measures it carries out to ensure cleanliness, safety and hygiene include conducting regular training and awareness campaigns on food handling and hygiene for the stall operators in collaboration with the State Health Department. Feedback on customer experience and food quality is also regularly gathered from students and staff.
