Accounting Club Curtin Malaysia members visit Miri Old Folks Home
Posted date:Miri – 31 May 2018 – 32 student members of the Accounting Club Curtin Malaysia (ACCM) of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently visited the Miri Old Folk’s Home in Krokop to carry out a community service project.
Accompanying them was Dean of the Faculty of Business, Associate Professor Pauline Ho.
The students cleaned the interiors, windows, drains and walkways of the home, and spent time interacting with its 24 residents, including playing games with them and entertaining them to some songs.
They also donated daily essentials and cleaning supplies, while Associate Professor Ho and a number of students made cash contributions of their own.
Student Sarah Tang said the visit was a very touching experience for her, especially seeing the senior citizens enjoying the presence of the students.
ACCM committee member Chin Ga Yi remarked that the senior citizens were very friendly and had very interesting life stories to share. She thanked all the student volunteers for their time and effort and hoped they were enriched by the experience.
Associate Professor Ho, meanwhile, said it is good for people to take time away from their busy schedules and gadgets to do a bit of community service, especially for the old folk, many of whom have been abandoned by their families.
“Many of them crave attention and love, and they really appreciate people visiting and spending time with them. When you talk to them, you’re easily reminded just how blessed you really are,” she said.
The visit ended with the students presenting souvenirs to each of the residents.
