Curtin Malaysia academic staff attend IEEE Senior Membership Elevation workshop

Miri – 21 April 2017 – The Faculty of Engineering and Science of Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently hosted an ‘Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) Senior Membership Elevation Workshop’ for academic staff of its Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).

The workshop facilitated by Ir. Dr. David Bong Boon Liang, a committee member of the IEEE Sarawak Subsection, was aimed at enhancing the professionalism of academic staff of the university by encouraging them to elevate their IEEE memberships to senior level.

Bong emphasised the importance of achieving appropriate recognition by international professional bodies such as the IEEE and showed the attending academic staff, all of whom are eligible for senior membership, how to prepare their applications.

IEEE membership offers access to the industry’s most essential technical information, networking opportunities, career development tools, and many other exclusive member benefits. Members can keep current in their chosen technology profession, connect with peers, and invest in their career advancement.

Senior member is the highest grade for which IEEE members can apply or be nominated for and to be eligible, they must be engineers, scientists, educators, technical executives or originators in IEEE-designated fields, among other requirements.

As senior members, they will receive the professional recognition of their peers for technical and professional excellence, be eligible to hold executive IEEE volunteer positions, be able to serve as a reference for other applicants for senior membership, and may be invited to be on the panel to review senior member applications.

Bong is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). He is also a professional engineer (electrical engineering) registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM); senior corporate member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM); and senior member of IEEE. His research interests include digital image processing, computer vision, artificial intelligence and smart technologies.

Curtin Malaysia has a very close affiliation with IEEE through its commitment to course accreditation and industry engagement and, in addition to IEEE membership of its academic staff, has a IEEE student branch established in 2008 and with a current membership of over 100 students.
