Curtin Malaysia launches campaign to raise awareness of health and safety issues
Posted date:Miri – 21 September 2017 – Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently launched a Health, Safety and Security Awareness Campaign at its campus to enhance awareness of related issues among its over 5,000 students and staff.
The event was organised by its Security Department in collaboration with The Library and Learning Commons, Office of Student Affairs, and Campus Services and Housing and Recreation Services departments.
It also involved the participation of government agencies such as the Royal Malaysia Police, Fire and Rescue Department, National Anti-Drugs Agency, Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission, National Population & Family Development Board, Community Policing Miri and the National Sports Institute of Malaysia (Sarawak).
In addition to increasing awareness of issues like personal safety and counter-measures, health awareness and family education, drug abuse, fire safety and fire-fighting, and Internet crimes and prevention, the campaign was also a platform for building closer ties and enhancing collaboration with the participating government agencies.
Present to launch the campaign were Curtin Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer Kingsley Francis Charles, President of Community Policing Miri Dato Hu Kuok Wei and ASP Lee Yen Fang of the Royal Malaysia Police Miri, as well as representatives of the other participating agencies.
Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski, in his speech delivered by Kingsley, said Curtin Malaysia strives to provide a conducive learning and working environment and is fully committed to promoting the safety, security, mental health and well-being of its students, staff and visitors.
He said the relevant departments and committees at Curtin Malaysia continue to do a commendable job providing a proactive, coordinated and planned approach to the identification, prevention, assessment, management and reduction of threats to its community of students and staff. He added that they have ultimately helped ensure a safe physical and emotional environment for the university community both on and off campus.
The launch event featured an exhibition and talks by speakers Saiful Abadi Naser from the National Anti-Drugs Agency Miri, who spoke about the effects and consequences of drugs, and Ahmad Bakhtiar Hamdan of MCMC who delivered a talk entitled ‘Dangers Lurking in the Cyberworld’. There were also safety and firefighting demonstrations by the Fire and Rescue Department.
