Curtin Malaysia students benefit from participation in national student leadership camp

Miri – 30 March 2017 – Attending the recent IEEE Malaysia Student Leadership Camp 2017 in Serdang, Selangor was an unforgettable experience for four student members of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch of Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia).

Student branch president and electrical power engineering student Jeff Kong Sheng How said the camp enabled him to meet and exchange information with leaders from other IEEE student branches in the country. It also motivated him to enhance his leadership of the Curtin Malaysia IEEE Student Branch and establish collaboration with the other branches.

Also attending were vice-president and fellow electrical power engineering student Bong Chu Jun, treasurer and electronic and communication engineering student Ng Kay Li and vice-treasurer and electrical power engineering student Han Kit Siew.

Bong commented that the camp helped her understand the IEEE global structure and membership benefits better. She also sees the importance of a good membership and the active participation of members to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Curtin Malaysia IEEE Student Branch.

Like Kong, she found the camp to be an effective platform for engaging with members of the other student branches and building a networks and collaborations across branches.

Held at Universiti Putra Malaysia, the camp’s objective was to inspire the young leaders of IEEE student branches at various universities to take their branches to new levels and to the international stage.

The camp commenced with a talk on the vision and mission of IEEE Malaysia Section by Chair of IEEE Malaysia Section Associate Professor Dr Mohammad Faizal Ahmad Fauzi, followed by talks by Chair of Student Activity Committee Dr Noor Ain Kamsani and Vice Chair of IEEE Malaysia Section Associate Professor Dr Fawnizu Azmadi Hussin.

Meanwhile, Kong, past chair of the Curtin Malaysia IEEE Student Branch Saaveethya Sivakumar and Arvind Rajan of Monash University Malaysia Campus jointly facilitated the ‘Think Tank Interactive Session’ where they shared information on student branch activities with the participants.

Other sessions on ‘Sponsorship and Fundings’, ‘Awards and Competition’, ‘Proposal Writing and Activities’, as well as budget updates from all student branches, were also conducted.

Advisor of the Curtin Malaysia IEEE Student Branch Dr Garenth Lim remarked that one of the critical components in developing outstanding graduates is inspiring them to become future leaders who are able to serve the multicultural community. He said the Curtin Malaysia IEEE Student Branch was among the several student bodies and leadership programmes at Curtin Malaysia committed to this objective.
