Curtin Malaysia students eager to complete final year in Perth

Miri – 12 April 2017 – Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) students Kevin Yeo Shu Jiun, Chin Zi Han and Jessica Gan Pei Heng, the most recent recipients of the annual Western Australia Premier’s Scholarship for Curtin Malaysia undergraduate students, recently left for Curtin’s main campus in Perth to complete the final year of their courses.

Before their departure, they expressed how they were eager to immerse themselves in a new learning environment in Perth and thanked the Western Australia Government and Curtin Malaysia for the opportunity to further their studies abroad.

The scholarship, which was first introduced in 2003, is aimed at giving outstanding Curtin Malaysia students the opportunity to gain different perspectives on their respective fields of study and experience a completely different lifestyle and culture in Western Australia. It covers return airfares and on-campus accommodation while Curtin provides a full fee waiver for the one year of study.

Gan, who hails from Tawau, Sabah and is pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce double-major in accounting and finance, is overjoyed at being offered the scholarship and fulfilling her dream of studying in Australia.

“I look forward to learning from lecturers there and making new friends, as well as opportunities to explore the attractions in and around Perth,” said Gan, adding that she plans to pursue postgraduate studies there as well.

Fellow accounting and finance student Chin remarked that the opportunity to study at the main campus will allow her to broaden her perspectives and realise her full potential. An outstanding student and recipient of multiple scholarships in the past three years, she aims to be employed as an auditor in one of the Big Four accounting firms upon graduation.

She advised students of Curtin Malaysia who would like to vie for the scholarship to continually work hard academically, be actively involved in extracurricular activities or community outreach, and generally make the best of their university experience.

Meanwhile, petroleum engineering student Yeo, who has always aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps in studying abroad, hopes to work in the oil and gas industry in Malaysia upon his return from Australia. He believes the knowledge and experience he will gain there will set him in good stead in his future career.

Yeo also commended his lecturers at Curtin Malaysia’s for helping him develop critical research, presentation and critical thinking skills which he will need in his final year.
