Curtin Malaysia students proud to represent Malaysia at IEEE-IAS event in US

Miri – 27 September 2017 – Four student members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Curtin Malaysia Industry Applications Society (IAS) Student Chapter will represent Malaysia at the IEEE-IAS Annual Meeting to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1 to 5 October 2017.

They are IEEE-IAS Student Chapter Chairman Jeff Kong Sheng How; Vice-Chairman I Bong Chu Jun; Vice-Chairman II Desmond Ting Zhong Xuan; and IEEE-Women in Engineering (WIE) Student Chapter Chairperson Ng Kay Li. Kong, Bong and Ting are electrical power engineering students while Ng is studying electronic and communication engineering.

Their trip to the United States is made possible through a grant from IEEE-IAS and funding from the Curtin Malaysia IEEE-IAS Student Chapter.

It will be a very meaningful experience for them as they will also be receiving awards on behalf of the student chapter at the event. The Curtin Malaysia IEEE-IAS Student Chapter is first-place winner of the IAS Chapters and Membership Department (CMD) Humanitarian Project Contest 2017 under the ‘Energy’ category for its ‘Light Up Miri’ solar lamp community project. The chapter, the first IAS chapter formed in Malaysia, has also been recognised as the most outstanding new IAS chapter, winning the IAS Outstanding New Chapter Award for 2017.

The IAS is a transnational organisation that promotes the advancement of the theory and practice of electrical and electronic engineering in the development, design, manufacture and application of electrical systems, apparatus, devices and controls, as well as the professional development of its membership.

Kong said he looks forward to networking with IAS delegates from all over the world and exploring the city of Cincinnati, while Bong is hopes to further develop her leadership skills through her participation in the prestigious international event.

Ting said he has benefitted greatly from membership in the Curtin Malaysia IEEE Student Branch and IEEE-IAS Student Chapter and encourages all students of Curtin Malaysia to join student clubs on campus to enhance their knowledge and skills and serve the community.

Ng, meanwhile, is a strong supporter of women in engineering and science as she believes they can contribute significantly to creating better technologies for our future generations.

Advisor to the Curtin Malaysia IEEE Student Branch and electrical and computer engineering senior lecturer Dr. Garenth Lim opined that events such as the IEEE-IAS Annual Meeting provide valuable international exposure for Curtin Malaysia’s students where they can develop and demonstrate their technical and leadership skills.

The IEEE Curtin Malaysia Student Branch was established in 2008 while the IEEE-IAS Student Chapter was formed under the IEEE Curtin Malaysia Student Branch in 2016.
